Congratulations on making it through 2020, the umpteenth lockdown, revisions of restrictions, and various virus variant news.
Time to look forward, and put one foot in front of the other as we tip-toe through the twenties. In that spirit, welcome to my blog, something I have wanted to do longer than I can remember!
As we launch this page, and I begin my journey as a qualified solicitor, I look forward to sharing this experience with you all virtually in true Rona style.
It’s not all doom and gloom. After World War I in the last century, our grandparents and great grandparents celebrated in true style with the roaring twenties (any other Gatsby fanatics out there?!). This is our roaring twenties. It’s coming. It will be glorious (we hope). We all long to see family and friends, bars, restaurants, the high street, parties of more than two or six, or twenty people even, and holidays abroad make their comeback. And when they do, there will be much to celebrate, to be excited for.
I think we all know by now the world will never be the same as it was. With lockdown came an explosion of developments in tech and the internet. From zoom quizzes, to remote hiring, and even raffling houses online instead of selling them.
We are in a time of change which brings with it a range of opportunities. As online retailers buy up high-street sweethearts, the K-recovery from the pandemic’s recession has so far seen technology and online platforms rise like a phoenix from the ashes. But how on earth will we keep up with the two worlds; online and in real life, how will the two merge together when we emerge from the clutches of the pandemic?
As part of a generation who grew up with the internet and smart phones, we have witnessed videos replaced by DVDs, DVDs replaced with streaming platforms; and even cash replaced with plastic, plastic replaced with apps, and now fiat replaced with crypto-assets. Who knows what will be next, and who will start it…
My favourite quote of all time is that ‘a goal without a plan is just a wish’ (Antoine de Saint-Exupéry). In my job with Bishop & Sewell, this couldn’t be truer. As a Corporate and Commercial solicitor, I see my job as helping plan and make wishes a reality. Nothing is more satisfying to me than helping visionaries create new realities.
This page is a place where I will share thoughts on market movements, legal developments and general commercial awareness: from the emerging market of cannabis, to life in the cloud and protecting your data. Expect the unexpected, start-ups, data protection, emerging markets, emerging tech, media and so much more.
Ever wondered why Netflix’s recommendations are so on point for you? Why Spotify creates great ‘For You’ playlists? Why advertisements are so targeted it makes it seem as if our smart phones are listening?
However, this is not a strictly corporate commercial legal blog, it’s everything and more. A place where mental health is not a taboo topic, somewhere to openly discuss societal developments including anything and everything. As a newly qualified legal professional forging my path, I’m sure we will cover topics I can’t even imagine right now.
What do you think the world will look like in 5 years? Shopping centres becoming flats? Sports replaced with e-sports? Autonomous cars, buses and trains? Trips to the moon? A cashless society? The legalisation of cannabis? Are these things even really that far away…?
